遂事不谏，既往不咎

哀公问社于宰我。

宰我对曰：“夏后氏以松，殷人以柏，周人以栗，曰：使民占栗。”

子闻之曰：“成事不说，遂事不谏，既往不咎。”

The duke Ai asked Zai Wo about the altars of thespirits of the land.

Zai Wo replied, "The Xia sovereign planted the pine tree aboutthem; the men of the Yin planted the cypress; and the men of theZhou planted the chestnut tree, meaning thereby to cause the peopleto be in awe."

When the Master heard it, he said, "Things that are done, it isneedless to speak about; things that have had their course, it isneedless to remonstrate about; things that are past, it is needlessto blame."

鲁哀公问宰我，土神的神主要用什么木头做牌位。

宰我回答说：“夏朝人用松木，殷朝人用柏木，周朝人用栗木。意思是使老百姓战栗。”

孔子听了后说：“已经做成的事，不必再解释了；已经做完的事，不必再劝谏了；已经过去的事，不必再追究了。”
